Strengthening Rural Communities

Overview

Prepare for first job and life on their own, Owning Life, is a pilot program meant to connect emerging adults with local business owners and professionals. Taking place in the business setting of a volunteer partner, the program includes 3 weeks of education and interaction with other volunteers in the community to encourage career development and entrepreneurship. The information presented through the program includes information about career paths, salary, withholdings, taxes, insurance, saving and investments, credit, goal setting, resume writing, interviewing, and more. The goal of this hands-on program is to give participants connections, resources, and skills they need to be successful employees and to follow their chosen career path. This pilot in Knox County has just ended and another one may be beginning in Shelby county. All counties of Tennessee are eligible to receive the program as extension agents work to identify community partners.
