Strengthening Rural Communities

Overview

The purpose of the grant is multi-focal: to prepare family nurse practitioner students to be practice ready upon graduation, to form innovative academic-practice partnerships in our community, address social determinants of health in underserved populations and the chronic health conditions that can affect those groups, and to develop and integrate the use of simulation into the program using standardized patient actorsDidactic and clinical preparation, preceptor participation, and simulation experiences provide the background knowledge and experience for the NP students to be practice ready upon graduation. Longitudinal clinical partnerships in eight surrounding counties provide an immersive clinical experience allowing students to gain hands on practice with patients and common disease processes seen in underserved areas. Knowledge is gained of how to address disease processes and promote health and wellness for their patients. Simulation with standardized patient actors reinforces didactic and clinical learning in a safe environment where nursing faculty can provide immediate feedback.
